A 10 Year Partnership dedicated to building a resilient & strong future

Our work in Laikipia North is guided by a ten-year strategic partnership co created with five Maasai community lands: Ilmotiok, Tiamamut, Musul, Kiljabe and Nkiloriti.

This is not an externally imposed development plan. It is the community’s own vision for the future, supported by Pamoja.

Together, we have mapped out the current challenges and risks, defined key priorities and co-created a practical roadmap for change.

At the centre of this vision is one powerful commitment:

A community-owned social enterprise model designed to deliver lasting self-sustainability.

Strong, adaptive food systems that endure even in times of drought
Healthy, resilient livestock and sustained support for pastoralist livelihoods
Programmes that protect nature while enabling sustainable progress

Improved health outcomes for everyone, with a strong focus on those most vulnerable
Community-owned assets and infrastructure that strengthen local resilience
Women and youth fully engaged in leadership, decision‑making, and enterprise

This is not about survival. It is about generational pride, prosperity and ownership.

Our Five Core Work Streams

Food Security Systems

Resilient Land. Resilient Families.
Food insecurity is driven by drought, soil degradation and over reliance on livestock.
The community’s roadmap includes:
• Agroforestry and horticulture
• Livestock restructuring to ensure optimal breeds
• Chickens for each family
• Community farming initiatives
• Marketing excess produce
• Training in sustainable agricultural systems
The ambition is clear:
Nobody goes without food. Surplus is generated and sold. Income circulates within the community.

Water Security and Management

From Emergency to Long Term Resilience
Drought remains one of the most significant threats to the region. Up to 90 percent of livestock were lost during the most recent crisis.
In response, we delivered 102,000 litres of emergency water. Essential, but not sustainable.
The focus now is long term water security.
Actions include:
• Commissioning water surveys across community lands
• Developing a comprehensive feasibility study for Laikipia North
• Designing a long term water management systems proposal
• Partnering with the Kenyan Meteorological Department
• Engaging Samburu County Government
The goal is reliable access to clean water for families, livestock and wildlife.
Water security underpins everything else.

Social Enterprise and Local Economy

The Engine of Sustainable Change
The community has clearly rejected individual profit driven models. Instead, they are building a social enterprise community.
This means:
• Enterprises are community owned
• Profits are reinvested into infrastructure and services
• Opportunity is shared across families
• Projects either serve or generate income for the community
Current initiatives include:
Eco Tourism
Eight safari tents have been purchased to establish a community run eco tourism enterprise in Musul. Women are leading this initiative, supported by broader community leadership. Training, industry guidance and market positioning are underway to ensure long term viability.
Beekeeping and Honey Production
A three year partnership with Bees Abroad is training 50 community members including men, women and youth in hive setup, honey production and market sales. This diversifies income beyond livestock and builds local enterprise skills.
Future enterprise growth includes skills training, livestock restructuring, agricultural marketing and technology enabled opportunity.
The long term aim is simple:
The community generates and reinvests its own income.
Health and Well-being

Prevention and Access
Health challenges include malnutrition, limited neo and post natal provision and poor access to services.
Future priorities include:
• Community health centres
• Preventative health programmes
• WASH initiatives
• Ambulance provision
• Integration of health with education and enterprise
Healthy communities are economically resilient communities.
Community Needs Assessment and Governance

In 2025, a comprehensive needs assessment was completed across all five community lands.
This assessment identifies:
• Existing skills and gaps
• Interests and aspirations
• Vulnerable groups at risk of being left behind
• What has and has not worked in the past
Women, youth and marginalised voices were central to this process.
Strong governance structures are also being established, including:
• Community land management committees
• Project specific committees for each initiative
• By laws to strengthen accountability
• Transparent decision making
• Community contribution to projects
Development succeeds when leadership is local and accountable.
